There are two fundamentally different kinds of side businesses. Conflating them is one of the most common ways people stall out before they start.
Freelance / services: you exchange your time and skills for money. A copywriter, a designer, a consultant, a coach. Clients pay for your specific work. Products: you build something once and sell it repeatedly. A course, a template, a SaaS tool, a digital download. Revenue doesn't require your direct time for every unit.
Both are real. Both work. But they require completely different first moves.
Services can generate revenue in days. You reach out to your network, one person says yes, you do the work, you invoice them. The path to first dollar is short. Products take longer — sometimes much longer. You build the thing, then figure out distribution. For most people, the "build" phase expands to fill all available time, and the hard part (selling) gets perpetually deferred.
This doesn't make products bad. It means the timelines are different, and most people underestimate how much longer the product path takes.
If you need validation soon (first dollar in the next 30–60 days), start with a service. It's the fastest way to confirm that someone will actually pay you for what you do.
If you have a specific insight into a repeatable problem, you've solved the same thing multiple times for different people, and you want to stop solving it one-on-one — then a product makes sense. But start by selling the service version first, then productize it.
The worst outcome is spending six months building a product nobody wants. The fastest way to avoid that is to sell the service version to three clients first. Their needs, objections, and questions are your product spec.
