Scope creep — where a project gradually expands beyond what was originally agreed — is one of the most common frustrations in freelance work. Most people treat it as a client problem. It's usually a contract problem.
It almost never starts as a deliberate power move from the client. It starts with vagueness in the original agreement. "Write copy for the website" — does that include the About page? The FAQ? The meta descriptions? The email opt-in thank-you page? Each of those is a scope question. If the answer isn't written down, it becomes a negotiation every time the client asks.
Vague agreements define effort ("I'll work on your marketing"). Tight agreements define deliverables ("I'll write copy for five specified pages: Home, About, Services, FAQ, and Contact"). With deliverables defined, the scope is clear. When the client asks for something outside the list, the answer isn't "no" — it's "that's not in scope, here's what it would cost to add."
If you're mid-project and scope has already crept, you have three options. First, absorb it and finish — useful if the client relationship has high future value and the ask is small. Second, document it going forward: "Happy to do X, noting this falls outside our original scope. If it becomes a pattern, we'll want to revisit the budget." Third, revise the agreement: "The project has evolved significantly from the original scope. Here's a revised estimate for the remaining work."
None of these require confrontation. They require clarity.
Scope creep feels like a character problem (difficult client) but it's actually a systems problem (unclear agreements). Fix the system and the character problem mostly disappears.
Your next engagement: before you start, define the exact deliverables in writing. Both parties sign off. Anything outside is a change order. This protects the client as much as it protects you — they know exactly what they're getting.
