When to Quit Your Job: The Number That Actually Matters

Most people who want to go full-time on their side business are waiting for a feeling — confidence, certainty, a sign that it's "ready." The feeling rarely comes.

There's a better anchor: a number.

Specifically: what monthly revenue from your side business would make you comfortable quitting? Not comfortable and thriving. Just comfortable — bills covered, savings not depleted.

The number converts a vague aspiration ("I want to eventually do this full-time") into a measurable target with a clear decision rule. If your side business hits the number for three consecutive months, you have evidence — not just hope. It also clarifies the goal. Most people haven't actually calculated what they need. They think about quitting in emotional terms, not financial ones. Run the math and you'll often find the number is lower than expected, or higher, and either answer is useful.

Your quit number = monthly fixed expenses + taxes + a 3-month runway buffer, divided by 3. If your expenses are $4,000/month, you need roughly $5,200 after tax to cover them comfortably (factoring in self-employment tax). With a 3-month buffer built in, you'd want to see $5,200+ consistently before making the leap. That's not a motivational target. That's math.

The calculation above is simple. What's harder is doing it honestly — including the variable expenses people forget (subscriptions, annual bills, car maintenance, the irregular stuff that averages out to real money).

Do the honest version. Then work backward. What does your side business need to hit that number? How many clients at what rate? How many months until you could plausibly get there at your current growth pace?

That question is much more useful than "is now the right time?"
