How to Talk About Your Rate Without Flinching

Most new freelancers lose money in the same moment: when someone asks "what do you charge?" and they flinch.

The flinch looks different depending on the person. Sometimes it's a stammer. Sometimes it's an apology ("I'm still figuring out my rates..."). Sometimes it's a number that's 40% lower than what they actually need. All of them signal the same thing to the client: uncertainty. And uncertain freelancers are risky to hire.

The most common mistake is filling the silence after you say your number. You say "$3,000," they go quiet, and you say "...but we could probably work something out" before they've even responded. They were just thinking. Now you've undercut yourself. State the number. Stop. Let them respond.

Don't present your rate as a personal fee. Present it as what the engagement costs. "For a project like this, the investment is typically $3,000–$4,000 depending on scope. I can put together a specific proposal once we've talked through the details." That framing is more confident because it's project-centric, not person-centric. You're not asking permission to charge that much. You're describing what the work costs.

Some pushback is real (budget constraint) and some is reflexive (first counter-offer is always low). You don't need to cave to either. The right response to "that's a bit more than I was thinking" is: "What were you thinking?" — not a discount. Get their number, understand the gap, and decide if there's a version of the project that fits their budget and makes sense for you.

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Both are valid.

Every time you undercut yourself, you set a precedent — with the client and with yourself. It becomes harder to charge more next time because you've anchored low.

Get comfortable with your number. Say it confidently. The clients who are right for you will meet it.
